23 MARCH, 2021

31st March 2021 is the last date to link your PAN to your Aadhaar and it is almost here.

Don’t worry if you haven’t linked your Aadhaar to your PAN yet. You can do it easily online within a few minutes.

Importance of linking PAN with Aadhaar

  • Your PAN card may become inoperative and there are high chances of your PAN getting deactivated on 1st April, 2021. This means you won’t be able to use your PAN card anywhere that needs you to quote your Permanent Account Number.
  • If you quote your unlinked PAN for a transaction, it will be deemed that you have not furnished, intimated or quoted the Permanent Account Number (PAN) and you may be liable for all consequences for not furnishing, intimating or quoting the permanent account number.
  • You may not be able to carry out transactions over Rs.50,000.
  • PAN card and Aadhaar linking is mandatory to process your ITR. If you don’t link your PAN to your Aadhaar, you may not receive your tax refunds.

If you have mentioned your PAN & Aadhaar while filing ITR in the previous assessment years, chances are that they already might be linked to each other. It is done by the income tax department if PAN and Aadhaar are already available to them.

Steps to Check your PAN Aadhaar Linkage:

Step 1: Go to income tax e-filing website

Step 2: Click on Link Aadhaar under the Quick Links part.

Step 3: Click on ‘Click here to view the status if you have already submitted Link Aadhaar request’ that is present on the topmost part.

Step 4: Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number. Click on ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’.

Step 5: You will see your account status.

Steps to Link PAN with Aadhaar

If you find that your account is not linked with your Aadhaar, you can easily link it by following these simple steps.

  • Enter your PAN, Aadhaar number and name as per your Aadhaar.
Please make sure that the Aadhaar number and name as per Aadhaar is exactly the same as printed on your Aadhaar card. If your Aadhaar card has only year of birth, then you must also tick the option: 'I have only year of birth in Aadhaar card'.
  • Enter the captcha or you can request for an OTP. The OTP will be valid for 15 minutes.
  • Click on Link Aadhaar.

Later, you will get a notification stating that your PAN is successfully linked to Aadhaar.

How to link PAN with Aadhaar through SMS

You can send an SMS to either of the PAN service providers namely NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited or UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited (UTIITL). You can simply send an SMS in a specific format to either 567678 or 56161.

To link, type UIDPAN<12 digit Aadhaar><10 digit PAN> to either 567678 or 56161.

NSDL and UTI won't charge you a fee for this. However, SMS charges as levied by the mobile operator will be applicable.

To link your PAN to your Aadhaar through online methods, an Aadhaar OTP will be generated if the details of your Aadhaar don’t match with those of your PAN. You will have to enter that OTP online to continue and complete the linking process. You will be redirected to the final page automatically if your Aadhaar details match your PAN details.

Check the status of PAN and Aadhaar linking through the website, if you have opted for the SMS or the offline linking procedure.

Things to remember before linking PAN with Aadhaar

  • Ensure that your name, date of birth and gender as on the income tax department website matches your Aadhaar card details.
  • If PAN details such as spelling of name, date of birth or gender do not match the details on your Aadhaar card, you need to update your details as per the required process. You may then link your Aadhaar to your PAN.
  • Online linking of your PAN and Aadhaar takes place through a direct link, and you don’t need to open an account.
